Marshalltown Bobcat Color Guard

Flag Spins

Dropspins

Hold the flag at "carry", silk up, and right hand at tab with thumb up pinching the sleeve.  Hands should be at the waist level.  Arms should never rise above the belly button unless the flag is hitting the ground while at this position (special circumstances).

Count 1: Release left hand (but keep hand there) and drop/twist the flag down to the left so the silk is pointing down (and so is the right thumb).  Now take the left hand and grab pole BELOW the right hand, thumb pointing down just like the right.   Only regrab with left when the pole is straight up and down, or the spins will be tilted.

Count 2: Release the right hand (but keep it there) and twist flag up so the silk is back up.  Now the right hand regrabs the pole BELOW the left, thumb pointing up just like the left.  Only regrab with left when the pole is straight up and down, or the spins will be tilted.

Repeat counts 1 and 2.

* If done properly, the arms should not wave.  Avoid looking like chicken wings!
** Only regrab the flag when the pole is EXACTLY vertical.  Dirty dropspins usually start when regrabbing occurs too early.

Doublefast

Hold the flag at "carry", silk up, and right hand at tab with thumb up pinching the sleeve.  Hands should be at the waist level.  Arms should never rise above the belly button unless the flag is hitting the ground while at this position (special circumstances).

Count 1: Release left hand (but keep hand there) and drop/twist the flag down to the left so the silk is pointing down (and so is the right thumb).  Now take the left hand and grab the pole BELOW the right hand, thumb pointing down just like the right.  Only regrab with left when the pole is straight up and down, or the spins will be tilted.

Count 2: Release the right hand (but keep it there) and twist flag past the silk up position to flat, silk pointing left.  Palm should be up.  Now the right hand regrabs the pole next to the left, pinkies together, thumbs out, and palms up.  Only regrab with left when the pole is perfectly horizontal, or the spins will be tilted.

Count 3: Release the left hand, and twist the flag with the right until the thumb is pointing down.  The silk will be up.  The left hand now regrabs the pole BELOW the right hand, thumb pointing down.  Only regrab with left when the pole is straight up and down, or the spins will be tilted.

Count 4: Release the right hand and pull the flag until the left is palm up again.  The flag will be flat, silk pointing right.  The right hand now regrabs the pole next to the left, pinkies together, thumbs out, and palms up.  Only regrab with left when the pole is perfectly horizontal, or the spins will be tilted.

Repeat counts 1 through 4

* Each count is either up/down or parallel to ground, alternating.
** Each count, the flag moves 3/4 the way around, EXCEPT for the first count which is only 1/2.
*** Only regrab the flag when the pole is EXACTLY vertical or horizontal.  Dirty spins usually start when regrabbing occurs too early.
