Marshalltown High School Drill Team

About Us

Today, the Marshalltown Drill Team is the culmination of its past, using flag, weapons, ribbons, dance, and other auxiliary equipment.

We begin auditions in March and continue throughout the year, continuing in the summer.  For the past two years, we have had rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 - 5:30PM and on Sundays from 1:00 - 5:00PM.  During this time we practice fall, winter, spring, or showcase routines, drill, and basic flag, weapon, and dance techniques.  We will work with student schedules that include activities such as Cheer, Show Choir, Sports, etc.  However, work is not an excuse.

Events that we participate in throughout the year are:

Showcase (May or June)

Football halftime (Fall)

Homecoming Parade (Fall)

Octemberfest Parade and Competition (Fall)

1 to 3 extra Marching Competitions (Fall)

IHSMA State Marching Contest (Fall)

About the Coach

Megan Assenmacher-Umthun is a 2009 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa.  She double majored in Music Education and Physics for a time, with scholarships in both areas, but decided to finish her college career with a B.M. in Music Education.

Her color guard career started in 1999 as a freshman at Bettendorf High School.  There she participated in Marching Band and Winter Guard, learning flag, rifle, sabre, swing flag, dance, and choreography techniques.  Every year, she wrote a solo and weapon work for herself and the team.

In 2003, she began attending UNI and was part of the color guard there.  She also began choreographing for schools in the area.  Just a year later, as a sophomore, Megan was chosen as a captain and choreographer for the UNI Color Guard.  A year after that, she was hired as a Drum Major and stayed in this position for 3 years, all the while, continuing to choreograph for color guards in the area.

During her 15 years of color guard experience, Megan as choreographed for 9 schools, including winter guard routines for the Iowa State Drill Team Association and Marching Auxiliaries competitions, the Fresh From Florida (Citrus Bowl) Parade, and one school in Florida.  She also has experience in drill writing for teams and uses the program Pyware.

Megan is continuing her guard and dance education by taking dance classes in Des Moines, IA for choreography, classical ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip hop, and tumbling.  In addition, she has begun to learn baton, mace, and rhythmic ribbon.
